for Steve Ellis
Here at the vast edge of what is,
I call out to you and hear response
from light within I bend and reach
in humility at the tasks which call
into me evenings in the hammock
where I awoke in the hammock new
and fall and rise each beating of
my anxious heart reclines to us
in our own density and fathoms,
the darker light remains to mark
and skein, the doubt no outer calls
ahead and scores us newer than this.
Oh, power, I beseech and flame, we
make this day the whole and sum within.
